Gary Shteyngart's "Confessions of a Watch Geek" New Yorker article

The other day, I watched a Hodinkee YouTube video, where Gary Shteyngart shared and talked about his watch collection.

I am normally not a fan of Hodinkee "celebrity" watch interviews, but I found his passion and self-deprecating humor disarming enough to sit through - and enjoy - the entire episode.

He referred to his New Yorker article, "Confessions of a Watch Geek", which I read the next day. It retraces some of the same ground as the Hodinkee interview, but from a different context. I thought it had some rich insight into what drives some of us to become (or aspire to become) a WIS.

I hope you enjoy it!

Bezel backward slight movement

As the bezel rotated counterclockwise and then tried to reverse the direction clockwise, there is a little bit of movement in clockwise direction. Is that normal?

Regulating my 7S26 movements

$

With my $20 watch toolkit, I thought I'd take a shot at regulating a couple of my SKX's 7S26 movements. This was my plan after the local watchmaker wanted to charge me $30 to regulate one :o

I checked out a few old threads on this site, WUS, and watched a few DIY instructional videos (Long Island Watch's video was the most useful) on YT, and jumped in. You can't tell from this shot, but after a week of observation, my SKXA35 was running slow, while my SKX173 was running fast.

I used a toothpick to move the adjustment a tiny increment for each movement. Since I don't have a timegrapher, it's going to be me monitoring and some trial and error +/- adjustments over the next few days.

If anyone has any other tips on this topic, I'd be grateful to hear them.

While I had my newb kit open, I thought I'd fix my hard to turn bezel on the SKX173. After applying some silicone grease to the bezel gasket, everything works smoothly again.

I probably wouldn't have attempted this without seeing the excellent related and unrelated DIY's posts on SCWF from our outstanding members here. Another reason this place is such a great resource - thanks to the collective for enabling me.

Another 6139 saved

I purchased this 6139 from a small online auction site. I could see from the pics that the sub-dial hand had fallen off, and they mentioned being unable to change the day/date, and the crown was not or could not fully seat. Considering the low price, the good condition of the dial, and the fact that the case was unmolested it was well worth the risk.

Issues When Received

Would not reset to zero, sticking/non-working pushers, Crown sticking out,
Day/Date Quick Set not working, sub dial hand fell off. etc etc. Basically a mess.

Sent it off to Tom (SeikoPsycho2) to have a look and here is his analysis.

"Hi Mark,
I've had a look at your 6139. It took a little time to sort all the issues but I think everything is resolved. Where to start? There were quite a few different issues.

1. First off, somebody had attempted repairs in the past and burred up the movement plate stem bore. The stem had been replaced and was not trimmed correctly which basically meant the crown stuck out from the case too far. The stem bore burrs needed removing because they interfered with re-inserting the stem + crown smoothly. The crown gasket was hard and needed replacing. I cleaned up the bore + trimmed the stem correctly. I replaced the crown gasket.

2. The day + date quick set issue was an internal problem requiring removal of the hands + dial to check the quick set mechanism. The setting lever was bent + the day-date corrector finger was also distorted. I replaced both.

3. Reset issues: The reset pusher was bent + the spring was missing. The gaskets were also hard and needed replacing. The hammer click was also adjusted with too much tension which probably contributed the the sub dial hand popping off. I straightened the reset pusher, installed new gaskets, + installed a pusher spring. I adjusted the hammer click + re-installed the sub dial hand.

4. I checked the running condition on my timegrapher and adjusted the beat error which was slightly off and regulated the time keeping a bit for more accurate time keeping. It is running well and appears to be in a healthy condition. I installed a new case back gasket."

Some 6139 Porn

Before with bezel off. Pretty dirty, but could be a lot worse!

Then, after Tom got a hold of it! The man does great work, to say the least.

And the parts, at the 6 o'clock position are what was replaced.

My Newest Addition...the Seiko 6105-8110 possibly my last project

Well due to my failing health...i find this latest project may be my last...it has all the signs of being the wrong one to start with...case has been polished and damaged....the case tube is broken and missing...there is corrosion under the case back seal..the click ball is stuck and also the lug holes are loose and elongated....so i know most would not even consider this one worth their time and look for a better case ...but as most of you know..i love a underdog story....my plans are to try and restore this to as original as possible but not making it look brand new...i want this to look as original and used as it should be ..I will be only using genuine seiko parts if at all possible with the exception of a type 2 Spencer Klein Crystal and VTA seals...i will show with minimal expenses that even something that has been this unloved and abused can be brought back to nice condition with some knowledge and some great craftsman here on the forum...my plans are to replace the damaged case tube and replicate the tube as it was and restore the crown workings as it was...the damaged case seal will be machined out and i will have a very experienced friend tig weld the area and lathe cut the seal area to like new...and then micro weld the damaged case and then finally try and replicate the finish this beautiful watch once had...and i will also show u how to take a damaged caseback and repair it as well...all of these things can be done very cost effectively as well with some ingenuity and some thought...
i will also show how to relume and dial and hands ...with simple tools at home..and lastly ...my original movt was damaged beyond repair due to water so i will also be showing how to take the seiko 6106 base movement and make yourself a 6105b movt with the correct genuine parts....all of these can be done with some time and right resources and lots of patience...i want to thank many great friends who have kindly sold me many new genuine movt parts to be able to do this conversion.....16 parts in total to make this all work
this will take me much time with my health being very poor and with help from great friends here on the forum...i will try and show that even though we start with not the best example...with some hard work and some smart buys...you too can have one of the best watches Seiko even produced...God Bless,John
most of the processes i will do i will add links here from others who i am following in their footsteps...if it were not to forums like here and others..i would never consider something this involved....so many great people here have figured out how to fix and repair these amazing watches...we all need to thank them all...without their time and knowledge .....many of us would be in the dark...i want to thank everyone of them...thank u for sharing the skills u have learned with us all...

well here is what i am starting with....i have been fooling around with what i have...the dial and hands are from two different watches...dial is genuine and shows wear and tear...needs a good cleaning and relume....
hands were from a 7625 i got some time ago...love the lume color..almost a khaki color...never seen that color before...not sure if will try and replicate it...the band is from a great friend...it is from a Seiko 6139 it is called the Presidental band ...i will use this with a set of Seiko 6138 jumbo end links...thank u again for that idea my friend...
thank u all for reading this...i know the chapter ring is all wrong...a Seiko 6309 chapter looks wrong..but for some reason i like it...
God Bless,John

Upgrades (or how I stopped worrying and learned to love being inept)

If you could upgrade a cheap Chinese ultrasonic to an Elma S-30H.

Or, a Weishi 1900 to an MTG-5000A.

Or, buy an Elma Td30 Dryer.

Or keep saving for i dunno how long and get a Elmasolvex SE....which is probably overkill....

Which would you do?

1900 is good but I feel like a more accurate system would be nice. I've no idea if the mic or system is that much better. But we all know that nice tools lead to a more enjoyable process. This is I'm thinking the least necessary.

The cleaning process could be quieter and so an ultrasonic that is slightly more costly I would assume would do a more efficient clean and in a less ear shattering way than the grindy sound of what I use.

A dryer would be really useful for after the parts come out of the US.

But at 1.7k...which for me is simply not doable but those solvex machines look the shit so....maybe I just sell everything!

Other than that it would be minor upgrades to drivers, oiling pots, tweezers I have covered...erm stuff like broaches and maybe a staking set as there are times where my Seitz and Zuklie jewelling tools aren't of course appropriate.

With the 5500 and 5700 crystal and caseback remover and my BM-1 microscope I don't think this needs any attention....I was looking at a zoom microscope like the amscope sm-6T I think it's called....but no point I reckon.

If I've missed something let me know but I do wonder about the cleaning process and having a more quality timegrapher a lot at the moment.. even the MTG-9000A but....well I can barely afford the 5000 so...it would involve selling the 1900 for whatever it fetches. Maybe the zuklie or Seitz but I need to work out which tool has the most useful set for me....and after selling a few watches and it barely denting any debt I wonder if really I would benefit in doing something like this instead of trying to find a different watch...

Anyone here done any DNA testing yet?.

Well as some of you know...i have been very ill for a very long time and also being adopted...here in NY state...your records are locked up tighter than Fort Knox...so after talking with a friend who works for a Tv Show...and suggesting i contact them...they suggested i do this Ancestry DNA with Traits as it may help find my blood relatives and get some insight to why i am so ill ...
to my surprise...and very much time online with all this new info available..i found out not only do i come from a huge...i mean huge family on my Mom's side...my Dad's side is just as big...my family is all over my home town...and i found out also i have a older brother who i just met a few weeks ago...excellent guy and i have known his wife for close to 25 years or more...i also found out i have a younger brother too...all from my Mom's side and My Dad had two daughter's who i went to High School with...they are younger than me...but so funny how God works...i did also find out what my ethnicity is too...
33% English...so many relatives who came straight from England...
30% Swedish...Grand Mother is 100% Swedish i am told...she was a Johnson
28% Irish/Scotish....my Great Grand Father was 100% Irish...
7% Norwegian
2% Germanic Europe
and some Jewish as well...
i am real tall at 196cm or 6'4"...
i always wanted to know where i came from...
very funny it took till i got very ill to get any real answers...
to anyone who does not know where they came from...
trust me...find out..no matter how scary it may be...it will be very cleansing for your mind and soul to know...no matter the results....the truth will always set u free...
God Bless,John
i always thought i had some English in me...who knew it would be so much...

Scratching an itch, SKX033 mod

Ive be lusting after a particular watch for some time now, and i often find myself dribbling down the window of the Ernest Jones shop in town.
I think the counter staff think im kind of stalker and the window cleaner gets pretty peeved at having to clear the snot marks from the window after my visits.
At £3.2k i cant justify the purchase.
So whats a WIS to do?

Well i spotted this SKX033 in Ramons little shop of horrors, a bit pricey at £50 but those monster hands will come in handy for a restore or another mod so i bought it.

Click on the pics to enlarge.
Attachment 403981

Out goes the worn out and rusted 7S movement and in goes a new NH35 with manual wind and hacking. I have to use the original SKX dial/movement spacer as its slightly higher than the one that comes with the NH. to do this the date wheel needs to be removed, and as the dial im going to use has no calendar complication ive left the date wheel and its components out.
The 7S stem is one piece and wont work in the NH, so ive had to use an AM crown, then trim and screw in the NH stem
Attachment 403983
For this mod i have used a generic Rolex bezel insert, the size is close but it sits higher than the SKX crystal, so i have installed a slightly thicker crystal, the insert now sits nice and flush with the crystal. I had to stick the insert in as the O/D is slightly smaller.
Attachment 403985
Guessed what is yet?
Dagaz dial and hand set and its all together.
I have sterilized the SKX chapter ring and had to enlarge the internal diameter as it was covering over the chapter ring on the dial
