Amazing !!!

Just Amazing to think that it takes so many specialist's to create and assemble a Watch. We have all seen video's of assembly/production lines in watch manufacturing facilities...Right ? Each individual has a Talent and that is there Job. The culmination of efforts by many produces a Watch. Now, Just to think that any one of us who thinks that they can do it all, Repair, relume, Service or whatever one thinks needs to be done to a watch including treatment and re assembly of parts seems impossible. I'll be quite honest, This is an ongoing Hobby that I intend on keeping intact until I pass. Some do it for profit and are self advertised because they think they know what it takes for the Many in a production facility to accomplish. Or they create self merit within a circle if you will... Claiming they know more on a watch that than others...I would like to think we all know better than that. No One can do it all. So for the folks who charge $ for services Say 6139's or 7a28's , Or Chronometers or whatever...How is it that one justifies the taking of $ ? Understandable parts cost and time. But the expertise just isn't there. Hobbies are Great aren't they ?

part of my collection...

hi all,

i've had a weird time of it lately, lots of material loss,
the big one being my house burning completely to the
ground. at this point, i've rebuilt the house, so really,
no condolences are necessary, i honestly can't really tell
if it was a good thing, or a bad thing, that happened.
it is just what happened. i had good insurance, and
i had paypal and credit card receipts for all of my
watch collection, so i was able to rebuild my watch
collection, too. but since this has meant sending a good
number of watches out for services and re-luming, well,
i still have 9 watches represented by paper cutouts :)

i built four wooden trays to house my collection, they're
titled "chronos & monsters", "blue & orange", "fliers &
divers", and "fine black and white". the "fine black and
white" box is pretty much done, so i crowded the tenants
of that tray together and took a group photo...left to right
are:

1. Franken 62mas (Thanks Jon and Guy)
2. 5126-6030 (Thanks Guy)
3. 6105-8009
4. Helson Speardiver ( 6105-8009 re-interpretation)
5. 7005-8052
6. Omega 2254.50 modified (Thanks Duarte)
7. 6306-7000 ( a reproduction of my favorite watch that
burned up in the fire, Thanks Duarte)
8. 7C46-7011 (Thanks Duarte)
9. Dagaz Tsunami Bone Frog ( to be re-lumed and
bead-blasted.)

it's been a lot of time and trouble and waiting and dollars
to rebuild what had been lost, which were about 25 vintage
and a few contemporary watches...i am going without so
many things that i used to own, and my only extravagance
is the watches....i'll add in the other 3 trays as they
are completed. i wound up with 43 watches...i feel like that's
too many, and i want to bring it down to 30. i have a strong
penchant for restoring, re-luming, and also modifying, so
i know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but if anything interests
you, let me know. i have been a life-long artist, and i
approached this project the way i'd approach any art project,
i swing for the fences each time.

thanks all,

peter

7546/8 dedicated movement holder

$

Hi all

I've been tinkering with an old non working 7546 movement stripping out the day and date elements for something to do. I have some decent screwdrivers and other bits and pieces and it's going quite well - having only permanently lost one screw although watching them fly around frequently. I only have the plastic/carbon tweezer set so perhaps I need metal ones.

Anyway I have a couple of questions. Is the perceived wisdom to remove hands and dial before doing too much related to the electronics and crown mechanism side of the watch? Reason I ask is that I have real trouble gripping the movement in my Bergeon movement holder. It's the plastic one (I thought best for quartz?). I've read on here previously that people have problems with this. It was forever working loose with little pressure applied. After constant repositioning and tightening on what was essentially a grip on the dial as it is proud of the movement, it came lose from it's little welded posts. I'd hate that to happen with a watch I cared about. Even with the hands and dial removed I still couldn't get any decent purchase to stop it moving around.

I see on eBay that there are dedicated movement holders of many kinds but not it seems for these types. Are they only for mechanical movements? For example there is a 6309 designed holder from VTA which does other similar movements

I believe I've seen 6309 internals placed in 7548 cases (or is it the other way round?). Would that mean that this holder type would accept the quartz mechanicals?

Thanks

Gavin

6309 7040 experts: are these hands authentic and original?

$

Hi all,

Can any experts please chime in on whether you think these 6309 hands are authentic and original? So far my thinking is as follows:

Points in favor of authenticity:
  • Reputable seller
  • Dial looks authentic
  • Rounded rear corners on minute hand arrowhead
  • Lume color and glow matches dial perfectly
  • Narrow tip of minute hand
Points against authenticity:
  • Slightly sloppy lume application on hour hand
  • The flat surfaces of the hands are more reflective than my other original 6309s. I'm not sure how much of the matte silver finish on those pieces comes from patina vs the factory.
I did my best with the pictures but, as you probably know, taking photos of hands under reflective mineral glass is a nightmare. If there are other distinguishing features of the hands that can be better captured from a different angle, please let me know and I'll give it a shot.

Thanks in advance.

Monster bezel

I purchased what I think is a first Gen SKX779 monster. The bezel wasnt seated quit right on one side so I removed it. Rather than the o-ring I was expecting to see on the bezel I found a thin wire that was not positioned properly when the bezel was put on so it got pinched and damaged the inside edge of the bezel. I got a new bezel and o-ring but it wont stay on. Not sure what the issue is any ideas? The left bezel is the new one and the right is the old and the wire that was holding it on.

Seiko is Moving Upmarket

I just read an interesting article in Bloomburg.

Seiko USA will soon be dropping the low and mid-range models and focus exclusively the luxury market. No more $80 Seiko 5s or all the mid-range models like the Cocktail, Alpinist, or Prospex.

Seiko has announced that they will become exclusively a luxury brand in the US market with a median price of 8k.

Read all about it in the Bloomberg article here:

I wonder how this will affect the vintage market?

In the future will a vintage Seiko Sports Diver become more valuable because Seiko has become a luxury brand now?

Will the low and mid-range models still be available on the SE Asian market, and thus be available still worldwide via the internet?

So many questions.

So I was initially looking to add a Seiko 7a28-7040 to my growing Quartz addiction. Instead I came across this 7a38-7070. What do you guys think its worth in this condition? I'm getting counter offered with $300.

Time and chrono function works according to the seller. Need help to decide quick if I should proceed.

Help identifying seiko watch

Hi! Currently renovating the house and I stumbled a seiko watch. Asking for help from our aficionados identifying and it’s authentic. The bezel is loose and the hands don’t work anymore except when being hand wind. The date is working. The crown still works for the hands but not for the date. The watch is heavy.
Any thoughts?

Fake Pogues on the 'Bay

Fake dials are all over ebay nowadays. 62mas, 6105, and 6309 fakes are usually easily identified (so far!), but fake 6138 and 6139 dials are getting harder to spot all the time. Search for 6138 or 6139 and you will find dozens of them with fake dial and other am parts. It is very easy to pay a lot of money for what you think is a genuine watch to later find out you've bought a fake.

You can buy a complete fake for lots of money, or the parts to fake one yourself. Everything you need to make a fake is on the 'Bay... I found this piece of crap that purports to be a very desirable Proof Speedtimer from February 1969. If this was real with a date as early as that I would be all over it as would a lot of other collectors around the world. Everything is wrong about this watch. I needn't list it all, because it is everything! Check out particularly the engraved caseback.... Seiko casebacks are not engraved, they are stamped.

I originally posted this thread on 'eBay good or bad', but I think it best to put it on our main forum. This shows the importance of knowing your hobby and doing the research before you buy..... The Pogue featured here is a particularly awful one that is not at all convincing, but some are there to fool you and are not as easy to spot a lemon.

I know this might be a long shot, I've seen posts lamenting the lack of availability of these parts, but I'm looking for battery hold down strap and screws for a 7458...anybody? Or anyone know where else to look?
